As one of Hong Kong’s leading container terminals, we are dedicated to transforming Hong Kong into a smart and green port characterised by efficiency, reliability and innovation.
The Port of Hong Kong is navigating a challenging landscape marked by declining throughput, rising geopolitical tensions and intensified regional competition. Despite these headwinds, HIT remains steadfast to strengthening its market position and leadership.
To meet these challenges and deepen our integration with the Greater Bay Area, we continue our efforts to build strategic partnerships to enhance connectivity and cargo flow.
Since launching the Shenzhen-Hong Kong Connect port cluster, we have further integrated the two ports through a joint venture with Shenzhen Port Group, enabling seamless and dedicated barge services. The connection is also extended to Beibu Port Gulf and the vicinity with the “Chengdu-Shenzhen-Hong Kong” sea-rail services, reducing transit times by half and providing businesses in Chengdu with a stable and efficient export channel. We also supported the Transport and Logistics Bureau’s initiative to establish a partner-port alliance with San Antonio in Chile, expanding our international reach.
Automation and digitalisation are spearheading the transformation of our terminal operations. We are currently testing and commissioning our inaugural Autonomous Truck (AT) for rollout this year, while simultaneously expanding our remote-control crane fleet and deploying AI-powered systems. By setting new standards for intelligence, sustainability, and safety, these ATs position us at the forefront of innovation in Hong Kong’s maritime sector. Collectively, these investments underscore our commitment to technological excellence and our mission to enhance efficiency and safety across our terminals.
Operationally, HIT achieved a historic productivity milestone by deploying ten quay cranes collectively to handle the 366-metre OOCL Egypt and the 399-metre OOCL Scandinavia in a complex transshipment operation. Around 12,000 containers, equivalent to more than 20,500 TEU, were efficiently processed within 70 hours, underscoring Hong Kong’s world-class operational capabilities as a vital catch-up port and a leading transshipment hub.
Our pursuit of sustainability is equally strong. Following successful trials, we will introduce new electric tractors, together with electric reachstackers and other environmentally-friendly equipment to further reduce carbon emissions. HIT also supported Hong Kong’s first simultaneous LNG bunkering operation, marking another step toward a more sustainable port ecosystem.
Moving forward, HIT will continue to collaborate closely with the HKSAR Government, policymakers and industry stakeholders to advance the Action Plan on Green Maritime Fuel Bunkering and the establishment of partner ports, with the aim to solidify Hong Kong’s position as an international maritime centre.
